The Division investigates matters pertaining to business licenses, endorsements, and licensed professionals.
The Banking Section charters and examines State-chartered banks, bank holding companies, credit unions, trust companies, small loan companies, business and industrial development corporations, payday lenders, and premium finance companies.
The Consumer Finance Section in the Division registers, licenses, examines, and investigates complaints regarding non-depository financial institutions including mortgage brokers, lenders, and originators as well as money service businesses that are money transmitters (wiring of funds), issuers of traveler's checks, money orders, or stored value cards. The mortgage lending industry is regulated through the Alaska Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2010.
The Consumer Protection Unit investigates unfair or deceptive business practices and files legal actions on behalf of the State of Alaska to stop such practices. The Consumer Protection Unit also engages in informal mediation of consumer complaints, educates the public about consumer issues, proposes legislation and regulations regarding trade and business practices, enforces antitrust laws, and registers telemarketers, charitable organizations, paid solicitors, and sellers of business opportunities.
